Dr. Blakely is currently the Professor of Urban Policy at
the United States Studies Center at the University of
Sydney where he coordinates the Centre’s programs
on global urban issues with an honorary professor

Until 2009 he headed the recovery of the City of New
Orleans. In this role he coordinated all aspects of
municipal government from planning and financing to
construction of major infrastructure related to the
recovery of the City from the worst modern urban
disaster in the United States.

Since he is not full time with the US Studies Centre he
has formed
Blakelyglobal as a strategic policy
consulting group to provide advice and direct
assistance in his areas of expertise.
Disaster Recovery & Management
Recovering from natural or man made disaster is an
exercise that is separate from the immediate disaster
rescue and stabilisation. While there are many
people and organizations with expertise in disaster
reduction there are only a handful of individuals and
organizations that know how to develop the plans,
funding and management systems to recover a city or
region post disaster.

Dr. Blakely has been involved as a manager in six
large scale disasters involved in all aspects of
recovery management. His most recent experience
was in New Orleans.

Sustainable Development
Integrating social, economic and physical development
into a common framework has been a hallmark of my work
for my entire career even before the term sustainable had
become widely used. I have incorporated this approach in
major projects in San Francisco, Oakland, New Orleans,
Paris and in many African and Asian cities.  In addition, I
have developed with Ali Sahabi  Dos Lagos a Suburban
Sustainable real estate project in Southern California
where the University of California at Riverside dedicated
the
Edward J Blakely Center for Sustainable Suburban
Development
as a tribute to my contributions to the field.
